At Salinas High School, student and staff safety is a top priority, supported through a variety of measures. Safety operations are supervised by Angela Perez who communicates safety protocols and feedback with the administrative team and district. This administrator leads a safety committee composed of staff, students, and community members, ensuring comprehensive input and oversight.

Our school safety team collaborates with probation services, the local police department, and emergency services to ensure the highest level of safety for our school and students.

Safety team overview

Salinas High School has a dedicated safety team consisting of Campus Safety Leads working both day and night shifts. Currently, there are 10 Security Safety Officers and 1 Intervention/Suspension Center Aide in place.

To ensure an effective crisis response, Security Safety Officers are being trained to lead response efforts and support individuals in crisis. The School Safety Lead Officers play a crucial role in the recovery phase.

Additionally, Salinas High School has invested in new digital two-way radios. Each campus supervisor is responsible for overseeing designated areas daily, managing entrance/exit points, addressing crowds, handling student conflicts, and maintaining communication through the two-way radios. This system allows for efficient communication between all staff members, ensuring transparency for parents and the community.

At Salinas High School, safety is our top priority. Students are issued Identification Cards at registration, which they must carry at all times for easy identification and emergency purposes. Our Visitor's Policy requires all visitors to sign in at the security desk.

An administrator oversees safety operations, working closely with the Campus Safety Team and a full-time Deputy Probation Officer, Mr. Omar Ramirez. Our safety committee, consisting of staff, students, and community members, meets regularly to discuss safety measures.

The school employs two Safety Security Leads (one for day and one for night shifts), eight Security Safety Officers, and an Intervention/Suspension Center Aide. Additionally, our School Safety Lead Officers are undergoing crisis response training.
Staff and students practice emergency drills six times a year, including lockdowns and evacuations. For events with large crowds, extra security measures, such as metal detectors and additional officers, are in place.
SAfety and security in california schools

SAfety and security in california schools

The California Constitution guarantees children the right to attend safe, secure, and peaceful public schools. The California Department of Education (CDE), public school districts, county offices of education (COEs), and school personnel are responsible for creating these environments. First responders, community partners, and families also play vital roles. Schools must be prepared for emergencies, including natural and man-made hazards, and work to prevent violence and behavior issues. Comprehensive School Safety Plans (CSSPs) include strategies for preventing and educating about crime and violence, as well as ensuring social, emotional, and physical safety for both youth and adults.
